NCS Staff celebrations from 2013-14 school year

Every year Newark City Schools staff members meet in the Newark High School auditorium to kick the school year off on a positive note with Convocation. This is the teachers' first day back full-time, and we celebrate the many positive things staff and students accomplished during the previous school year. Read below to find out just a few of the great things NCS staff was involved in during the 2013-14 school year, including raising $22,300 for the United Way of Licking County.

Ben Franklin Elementary

  • Hosted more than 20 parent-involvement activities
  • More than 200 participants for the Cardboard Challenge
  • 6 Summer Kickball games
  • Walking Club walked more than 600 miles
  • Staff hosted 2nd annual Spring Carvinal
  • School has a garden plot at the 6th Street Community Garden
Carson Elementary
  • Three consecutive years taking 1st place for Licking County Schools at Bowl for Kids Sake
  • Served more than 1,000 free summer lunches to children for third year
  • Donated $2,000 to Jump Rope for Your Heart
  • Served 3,000 pancakes and sausage to families during Breakfast of Testing Champions
  • 6 students qualified for Ohio State Fair Spelling Bee. Rylan Celajes came in 4th in the State
  • Staff is a top contributor to the United Way
Cherry Valley Elementary
  • Veterans Day attended by 500 community members and veterans
  • Hosted Grandparents Days in October and May with more than 500 grandparents
  • Donated more than $10,000 to charities and 1,000 canned food items to the Food Bank
  • Hosted 2 Red Cross Blood Drives
  • More than 1,000 families attended end-of-year celebration picnic and family fun day
Hillview Elementary
  • Operation Feed - Raised 753 Cans and $1,700
  • Pennies for Patients - Raised $1,800, which is a school high 
  • Jump Rope for Heart - $1,645
  • Hillview Helps - $1061.67 and helped 4 Hillview Families with Christmas.
  • Relay Recess raised more than $2,100, served 600 free lunches and honored 21 survivors
John Clem Elementary
  • Raised $4,017 for Jump Rope for Your Heart
  • Raised $503 for Operation Feed
  • Collected hats, gloves, coats and blankets for the Salvation Army through the annual Mitten Tree
  • 5th Grader Sarah Fitterer won the Licking County Scottish Rite Writing Contest
  • 5th Grader Evelyn Zelmer won the Licking County Poetry Contest

Legend Elementary
  • Partnered with City of Newark for Safe Routes to School to build a bridge over Log Pond Run this fall
  • Legend and NCS raised more than $5,000 to help with expenses for the family of a Legend kindergarten student who died unexpectedly in the fall
  • Honored as a School of Promise by ODE
  • Hosted 4 blood drives with Red Cross
  • Served as a training site for the OSU Principal’s Academy for model literacy instruction. 

McGuffey Elementary
  • Operation Feed: $368  
  • Pennies for Patients: $1,334 
  • United Way (Hat Days): $600
  • Jump Rope For Heart:  $1,687  
  • Big Brothers/Big Sisters:  $125
Heritage Middle School
  • With the help of the Reese Family, developed the outside grounds for student and community use
  • Raised over $700 for Stephanie Spielman Fund for breast cancer research
  • Raised over $600 for a student’s family who suffered a house fire
  • Raised over $1,000 for Pennies for Patients
  • All grade levels participated in STEMfest
  • Partnered with Dawes Arboretum on multiple outside learning experiences
  • Continued partnerships with Big/Brothers-Big/Sisters
Liberty Middle School
  • Pennies for Patients raised $1064.34
  • Raised more $1,000 for a family at Legend Elementary.
  • The Liberty National Junior Honor Society spent 714 hours doing community work.
  • In Liberty’s 7th year of participating in Hoops for Heart, we raised $1345.25 for the American Heart Association.
  • Students and staff participated in the 7th annual Relay for Life event and raised money for the American Cancer Society.
Wilson Middle School
  • Wilson C-Tag students participated in the United Way Day of Caring and helped to improve the Jeff Gorley Community Garden
  • We hosted the Military Order of the Purple Heart and had decorated WWII veteran Mr. Jakeway share his life and stories with our students
  • Students raised over $300 for Honor Flight which helps to send veterans of WWII and Korean War to DC to visit their memorials
  • Wilson raised over $800 for Big Brothers Big Sisters and our student team won the Most Creative T-Shirt award at Bowl-for-Kids fundraiser
  • Our 7th and 8th grade Volleyball team participated in the United Way parade
Newark High School
  • Air Force JROTC Color Guard presented at district and state basketball games and a Columbus Crew game
  • The JROTC Air Rifle team won an international competition based in London
  • Key Club became official, raised over $1,100 for Hannah King and donated Christmas presents to two local families
  • C-TAG students involved in first Newark Community Film Festival
  • Organized 2st annual Community Clean-Up Day
  • School within a School received a $20,000 grant through the Lindorf Foundation for the community garden at the former Lincoln Property
  • Band (34 years) and choir (46 years) continued their success in reaching state finals
