Arts

Newark High School has a long history and tradition of successful arts programs, performing and displaying artwork throughout the community and at the school itself.
Our band, choir and orchestra programs continue to be recognized statewide for their excellence.

Band

The Newark High School Band features several performing ensembles. The curricular performing ensembles include Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Percussion Ensemble, and Jazz Ensemble. Co-curricular programs include award-winning Pride of Newark Marching Band, Pep Band, and several small performing ensembles. The band is active in the Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) Adjudicated Events including Marching Band, Solo & Ensemble, and Large Group.

The Pride of Newark boasts a State Record of 43 consecutive appearances at OMEA State Marching Band Finals, the longest of any band in Class AA (largest school) division.

Newark Band members perform throughout the school year committing hundreds of hours to rehearsals and performances representing our school and community with Pride.

Choir

Newark Choir
The Newark choral program has qualified for state competitions for 55 consecutive years, which is the longest running state qualifying streak of any choral program in the state of Ohio. The choir has also earned more than 100 superior ratings between its various choirs: Concert Choir, The Brotherhood of Newark, Women's Chorus and Women's Chorale. The Newark Choral Department also houses Modern Movement, Newark's premier pop a cappella group. Concert Choir has traveled to Toronto, Italy and the Czech Republic participating in international choral festivals. The choir’s spring concert is always an exciting production, and they have also performed at the Midland Theatre with the Newark Granville Symphony Orchestra during the holiday season.

Orchestra

The orchestra program has been in the national spotlight, after being profiled by the New York Times in 2009, and continues to provide new opportunities for students, such as the workshop and concert with Trans-Siberian Orchestra co-founder Mark Wood in 2013.

Drama

Newark High School drama performs multiple plays throughout the year, culminating with the traditional spring musical. In recent years, the group has performed Wonderland and Singin' in the Rain in the spring.

Visual Arts

Newark High School also offers many courses in a variety of Visual Arts, including art foundations, photography, drawing, design, ceramics, sculpture, painting, and art history. Student artwork has been displayed around the community, including at River Road and the Licking County Arts. Students have also been featured in the Ohio Governor’s Youth Art Exhibit, the OCC Art Show and the Scholastic Art Show.

The visual arts’ year culminates in a public art show in the spring in the Hub at Newark High School.
