National Honor Society inducts 54 new members

New National Honor Society members 2019 
The Newark High School chapter of the National Honor Society inducted 54 new members during its annual induction ceremony on Tues., Oct. 22. State Rep. Adam Holmes, of the 97th Ohio House District, was the guest speaker. Combined with the existing 56 members of the National Honor Society, this year's group is one of the largest in school history.

NHS regional orchestra qualifiers: Aiden Nease, Noel Zarnosky, William Chiacchira, Summer Davis, Amonie Akens

Five NHS students qualify for OMEA Regional Orchestra

Five members of the Newark High School orchestra program were chosen to be part of the Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) East Central Region Orchestra this fall. The students competed against other students from 21 counties in East Central Ohio by submitting solo recordings of themselves. The regional orchestra will rehearse for two full days prior to a public concert at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 24, at Granville High School. The students who qualified from Newark are: Aiden Nease, senior violin; Noel Zarnosky, junior viola; William Chiacchira, sophomore viola; Summer Davis, senior viola; and Amonie Akens, senior string bass. NCS achieves highest graduation rate on-record

The Newark City Schools' Class of 2018’s graduation rate reached 88.2 percent — the district’s highest graduation rate on-record, and nearly a 20 percent increase compared to 2008.  
 
“This increase means that more of our students are ready for life after high school, and it’s also an important indicator that the things we focus on are working,” Superintendent Doug Ute said.

Where is the Class of 2016 headed?

Graduates from the class of 2016 have been offered more than $1.8 million in scholarships, and 119 students have reported that they plan to attend post-secondary education options. NHS Media students receive student media awards from OU-Z

NHS Media students receive student media awards from OU-Z

Five Newark High School students have received Student Media Awards from Ohio University Zanesville. The students will receive their awards at a ceremony on Sat., May 21, and will have the opportunity to attend workshops through the college. The following students received awards: Madalyn Boucher, in Music Video; Brittney Mick, in Long form documentary and Long form narrative; and Jorden Tapia, Jacob Roberts and Robert Thomas, in Video Newscast. The student videos are available on YouTube at this link, alongside additional student projects that have been submitted to the Ohio Valley chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences student production awards. District, 3 schools receive ODE Momentum Award

District, 3 schools receive ODE Momentum Award

The Newark City School District and three schools were awarded the inaugural Momentum Award by the Ohio Board of Education. Carson Elementary, Legend Elementary and Heritage Middle School joined the district in receiving the designation. The award is given to districts and schools that received straight A’s on every value-added measure included in state report carts. Statewide, only 165 schools — or about 4 percent — received the Momentum Award. More +

Spirit of Newark, a documentary by NHS students, available on YouTube

A group of Newark High School students worked with local documentary filmmakers to create a documentary, "Spirit of Newark," which premiered at the Newark FAMFEST in early May. The documentary is now available to watch at this link. More +

Summer school registrations now open

With the end of the school year nearing, it’s time to start thinking about summer school if you are in middle or high school. The first section of summer school will be held from June 6 through June 24; the second session will be from June 27 through July 15. Middle school summer school is only offered during the second session. The cost for one semester is $153, and for both semesters is $204, for district residents. The cost for out-of-district students is $230 for one semester and $300 for both. More +

Congratulations to 2016 Leaders for Learning Award recipients

Congratulations to the Newark City Schools recipients of the 2016 Licking County Foundation Leaders for Learning awards, Laura Sluss, Kathy Stoll and Baron Smith. Laura, Kathy and Baron join 14 teachers county-wide who are receiving the award this year. Each teacher received an art-glass apple, and will have the opportunity to apply for annual $500 grants for classroom materials or professional development. The award is made possible through generous support by the Lindorf-Warner Memorial Fund of the Licking County Foundation. More +

Three Newark teachers receive travel grant

Three Newark City Schools teachers recently received a Tibbie Leslie Travel grant through the Licking County Foundation. Newark High School art teacher Melinda Bucholz will travel to London; science teacher Alex Schneider will travel to Vancouver; and Cherry Valley and McGuffey art teacher Emily Cline will travel to Mexico. The Licking County Foundation will award seven travel grants to teachers countywide this year, totaling $13,000. More +

NHS Literary Magazine receives award

The first edition of Newark High School’s literary magazine, Athenaeum, was recognized by the National Council of Teachers of English as “Above Average” for 2015. The NCTE’s Program to Recognize Excellence in Student Literary Magazines recognized just 11 high school literary magazines in Ohio as “Above Average” or better. More +

NHS Jr. ROTC receives Silver Star Community Service Award

NHS Jr. ROTC receives Silver Star Community Service Award

The Newark High School Jr. ROTC received the Silver Star Community Service with Excellence Award for the 2014-15 school year, the Department of the Air Force announced recently. The award recognizes the top five percent of all Jr. ROTC units based on community service in support of schools and local communities. It is based on the highest per cadet average of community service hours planned and conducted by cadets in a unit. The NHS unit was led by Kathryn Davis. More +

Newark High School’s Wildcat News Net students recently received awards in multiple categories from the High School Student Production Awards, which are a part of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. The awards were presented during the Ohio Valley Emmy Awards Gala on July 25 in Lexington, Ky. Student Antoine Groutars won in the Public Service Announcement Category for his PSA about donating blood to the American Red Cross. Groutars also received honorable mentions for a video essay about a trip to Washington, D.C., and for a short film titled "The Bridge." NHS Literary Magazine, Athenaeum, available now

The first edition of Athenaeum: The Newark High School Literary Magazine has been released, and is available for download here. The magazine has been led by student leaders and faculty advisor P.R. West. Athenaeum features poetry, essays, short stories, drama and artwork, each submitted by Newark High School students. Student staff members included: Madalyn Boucher, Sarina Lannan, Allison Nixon, Ayden Felix, Skylar Grimsley, Gaige Treadwell, Emma Vogelmeier, Kaitlyn Whipkey, and Miranda Woodgeard. Where is the Class of 2015 headed?

Newark High School's graduation is rapidly approaching for more than 300 high school seniors. Many of them are headed off to some form of post-secondary education or into the military, going as far west as the Air Force Academy in Colorado, east to Pace University in New York City, north to Eastern Michigan University and south to the University of Miami in Florida, and many places in between. Every month, Newark City Schools honors about 28 students from grades 4 through 12 in every school as our Citizens of the Month. Students are chosen for what they do both inside and outside of the classroom. Also every month, a different group from one of our schools performs for students and their families. Congratulations to 2015 Leaders for Learning Award recipients

Congratulations to the following three teachers for being named Leaders for Learning in 2015: Newark High School French teacher Juli Porter; Wilson Middle School Language Arts teacher Shellie Herrmann; and elementary math coach Rachel Fielhauer.

The Licking County Foundation honors teachers county-wide every year with the Leaders for Learning Award. Recipients are selected by principals and superintendents based on a teacher's belief that all students can, and want, to learn, as well as other criteria. Recipients receive an art-glass apple and the opportunity to apply for a $500 grant every year through the foundation.

State Farm Awards Grants to A Call to College and Newark City Schools

At a recent board meeting, State Farm® awarded grants totaling nearly $30,000 to A Call to College and Newark City Schools in support of academic achievement. A Call to College received $4,000 for the ACT Now! program and $15,000 for the Providing Early Awareness and Knowledge (PEAK) program. The Academic Opportunity for Success (AOS) program at Newark High School received $10,000 from State Farm. NHS Jr. ROTC Kitty Hawk Society Induction

Nineteen members of the Newark High School Air Force Jr. ROTC were inducted into the Kitty Hawk Air Society recently. The Kitty Hawk Air Society is an academic honorary society for JROTC cadets. To be invited to joint, sophomore through junior cadets must be of good character, have a B average in JROTC and an overall GPA of 3.0 without any failing grades during the preceding grading period. This is the first class of the society from NHS. NHS earns 2014 American Legion Auxiliary All American High School Award for Ohio

Newark High School recently earned the American Legion Auxiliary All American High School Award at the state level. The NHS Air Force JROTC competed in the American Legion Auxiliary All American High School Contest that led to the award. As part of the process, NHS proved its Americanism through the following ways: U.S. flag display; daily recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance; participation in the National Americanism Essay Contest; numerous presentations of the meaning of the Pledge of Allegiance; History of the U.S. Flag and flag etiquette; staff patriotic pride; and providing leadership in many patriotic community events.
